Garrett Michael Byers is an outstanding young man who lost his father to colon cancer when he was in the 2nd Grade. Garrett was accepted and will attend The Ohio State University in the Fall of 2019.
“My dad’s fight with colon cancer ended in 2011 and his struggles and pain greatly affected my entire family. In addition to developing my strong character and teaching me to care for others and work hard, my dad strived to help me understand the value of education. His desire was for his children to get an excellent education, give school our best effort, and to pursue a college degree. Even though colon cancer cut his life short, his passion and dreams live on in me. I would like to express my gratitude to The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation and all that they have done to help me pursue my degree in engineering at Ohio State University. The financial help eases the burden on my family and reduces the amount of debt I will carry on after I graduate from college. We support and appreciate organizations like The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation that work tirelessly to end this disease and support cancer patients and their families. Their mission statement reflects my own desires, to strive to find a cure for colon cancer and support those who work to research treatments and possible cures and focus on prevention awareness. I am thankful that this tremendous foundation offers a scholarship in honor of Jim Gainey and I am humbled to accept it for the 2019-2020 academic year. I am grateful that the foundation is honoring students who have lost a parent to colon cancer and that they care about us and our futures.” -Garrett Michael Byers

Jayna Alexis Landeros- 2019 Recipient of The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation Scholarship – in Memory of Jim Gainey
Jayna Alexis Landeros is an inspirational young lady who lost her father to colon cancer one month before her 13th Birthday. Jayna was accepted and will attend Cal State University, Channel Islands in the Fall of 2019.
“My father never had the chance to pursue a secondary education. I’ll be achieving one for both of us. Since losing him to colorectal cancer in February 2014, I planned to set goals for my life that would make him proud. Not only academic goals, but also hopes and dreams such as working with organizations centered on reaching out to those who don’t have the means to seek aid themselves. By overcoming the hardships I faced: loss, isolation, and fear of failure/disappointment, I have grown into an overall stronger person. I’ve learned I have the strength to resolve and face challenges that may arise in college and beyond, just as I have in the past. I have set out to honor my dad in my daily life by being kind and approachable to others. To me, ending cancer means giving families their wholeness, and I am passionate about supporting those on the front lines of fighting to find a cure and end to the disease. The support of the foundation means a great deal to me, knowing their support means there is hope for a future without colorectal cancer. It also brings me comfort knowing there is a community of people who I can relate to in a way many others can’t. Thank you so much for selecting me as one of the recipients of this award.” -Jayna Landeros
Congratulations, Jayna Landeros! You can conquer anything in life and all of us at The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation are so proud of you and excited to watch your future unfold. We wish you every success at Cal State University, Channel Islands; You will make this world a better place! Please watch her individual scholarship thank you video here.

Gabriela Augustina Loiz is a compassionate young lady who lost her father to colon cancer when she was very young. Gabbi was accepted and will attend Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois in the Fall of 2019.
“Losing my dad to colon cancer at a young age taught me many things most people won’t learn until they are well into their adulthood. I’ve learned the importance of spending every moment with the ones you love because you never know when things will change for the worse. I firmly believe that God has taken me through this journey so that I can help others who have gone through the same experiences. I will be the first in my family to receive a college education, it is my dream to pursue a career in Physical Therapy, and I am motivated to do so because I want to make my family proud. I believe this profession will allow me to give back to my community as well as put me in a position to be able to donate to cancer research. My dad left a legacy, not only is it my mission to continue his, but also to create one of my own. It is my goal to inspire others to keep fighting even when all the odds are against you. I want to encourage individuals like myself, because even though our loved ones have passed, we can still live on and honor them in our success.” -Gabriela Loiz
Congratulations, Gabbi Loiz! You have already accomplished so many great things in your lifetime, and along with your family, everyone at The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation is so very proud of you. Reece Michele Sandercock – 2019 Recipient of The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation “Recognition Award” Scholarship – in Memory of Jim Gainey
Reece Michele Sandercock is a lovely and caring young lady who lost her mother to colon cancer when she was in the 6th Grade. Reece was accepted and will attend Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas in the Fall of 2019.
“My mom’s journey with colon cancer started when I was in sixth grade; not only did I have to deal with transitioning into high school, but I also had to accept a new and detrimental change in my life. It’s harrowing to see someone who was the epitome of your strength in your home and life be ripped down and it’s hard not to question your own vigor for the future. You start to doubt your own abilities and the possibilities that your dreams might get blocked by something you can’t control. I know my mom would never want her death to inhibit me from living my life or reaching my goals and I intend to honor my mom by using my talents and knowledge to help others and create the life I want. I strive to keep the same positive outlook on life that my mother had. Of course, I want cancer to be destroyed so no one has to feel utterly helpless or have dreams stripped away from them. It would be a dream to help end this tragedy or at least impact and support people who will find the cure. It means the world to me that The WunderGlo Foundation will fill in part of my support system in order to help me achieve my ambitions and help me help others.” -Reece Sandercock
Congratulations, Reece Sandercock! Your strength and courage are an inspiration to everyone around you. Please know that your beloved mother, your family, and ALL OF US at The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation are so very proud of you. We wish you every happiness and success at Southwestern University; Your fierce determination and resilience can and will move mountains. Please watch her individual scholarship thank you video here.
Alyssa Mendoza- 2019 Recipient of The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation “Recognition Award” Scholarship – in Memory of Jim Gainey
Alyssa Mendoza is a determined and passionate young lady who lost her mother to colon cancer when she was 13- years old. Alyssa was accepted and will attend Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas in the Fall of 2019.
“At the age of 13, my mother passed away from colon cancer and I was in shock. As I started my sophomore year of high school, my mother’s death had affected me the most. I figured no one would help me through my high school years, so I gave up. My GPA went down from a 3.2 to a 2.8. But once 11th grade came around, I decided to step up and work to my fullest potential- knowing I would make my mom proud. My GPA changed from a 2.8 to a 3.3 through just one year of hard work. I honor my mom by sticking to what she has taught me, like loving my culture and staying true to my religion. My feelings about ending cancer are crucial. Every March, my sisters and I make our friends and family aware of colon cancer through social media. It only takes one conversation to get someone thinking about lifestyle changes or to get into a doctor’s office. Colon cancer left a huge void within our family and I wouldn’t want anyone else to become a motherless daughter like my sisters and I. The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation makes me feel proud in a way I can make my mother happy as I go into a secondary school.” -Alyssa Mendoza
Congratulations, Alyssa Mendoza! Your determination and perseverance, – while caring about educating others about colon cancer, are brave and admirable. We want you to know that your beloved mother, your family and every one of us at The Gloria Borges WunderGlo Foundation is so very proud of you. We wish you every happiness and success at Texas State University; We know that your strong will, devotion, and passion will lead you to achieve so many wonderful successes throughout your life!
