GLORIA BORGES AND DR. HEINZ-JOSEF LENZ
WunderGlo and her HJL
Ms. Borges was an attorney at O’Melveny & Myers LLP and a 2011 recipient of the Warren Christopher Values Award, the highest honor an employee at the firm can receive and one that honors those attorneys and staff who have exemplified the firm’s values of excellence, leadership, and citizenship. Ms. Borges graduated from Stanford Law School in 2007, and was a Pro Bono Program Graduate with Distinction. Ms. Borges graduated with magna cum laude honors from Duke University in 2004, earning Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in History. Ms. Borges’s commitment to community service and leadership activities has been demonstrated throughout her educational and professional career. She served as President of Duke’s Class of 2004 during her junior and senior years, and served as Vice-President during her sophomore year. At Stanford, Ms. Borges excelled in her commitment to community and pro bono work, graduating from Stanford’s Pro Bono Program with Distinction. She was the co-editor in chief of the Stanford Journal of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, a member of the Stanford Latino Law Students Association and American Constitution Society, and was an instructor for the Street Law Program which taught at-risk teens about criminal and constitutional law and procedures. Ms. Borges continued her commitment to community while at O’Melveny, serving on the executive committee of O’Melveny’s Latino Attorneys Group, while also serving as an Advisory Board Member of the Western Center on Law and Poverty, the co-chair of the Los Angeles Library Foundation’s Young Literati group, and a member of MALDEF’s scholarship committee. Along with Mr. Caballero, Ms. Borges served as the 2010 co-chair of O’Melveny’s annual Diversity Day, an event designed to raise awareness and celebrate all forms of diversity within the firm and worldwide community. In September of 2010, Ms. Borges was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer, but did not allow her diagnosis to stop her or her commitment to community. She launched a blog, www.WunderGlo.com, which detailed all of her experiences through an aggressive treatment to beat the disease, and through that blog, she inspired thousands. She has counseled dozens of cancer patients, was the keynote speaker at the Ms. JD conference in 2011, and was the 2011 commencement speaker at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. In January 2014, Gloria passed the baton and the responsibility of this foundation’s goals to her mother, Rebecca Keller. Rebecca continues the work of WunderGlo, to carry on this mission, because of her strong belief in the organization’s goals.
