What’s Going Well?

“Curiosity is more important then knowledge.” Albert Einstein

Many years ago when I signed up for my first coaching certification course, I was introduced to the idea of starting sessions with the question, “what is going well”?

This was an opportunity for the person to shift their focus away from all the problems they were facing and instead give attention to the areas in life that were going good because we often get stuck in a tornado of what is wrong with our lives.

Most of us are hyper-aware of what needs fixing. We can unknowingly look at life with the mindset of a pencil and eraser. Let’s erase this part, let’s change this part, let’s add in this…

It is all about fixing and figuring it out. Which is a great technique when dealing with math problems, but life is not a math problem!

This is very human of us and it is very “in the head” – it is not about a natural flow or a bigger trust. It is about control and it keeps us from enjoying life. I mean how can we stop and smell the roses when it is clear that they need to be watered and moved to a sunnier spot?

If this sounds familiar, know you are not alone. This is common and it is a habit that you can easily release by shifting your attention to what is going well in your life and getting curious about it.

When life gives you a hundred reasons to breakdown and cry, show life you have a million reasons to smile and laugh.

You don’t have to change anything, simply, in addition to noticing what isn’t working, notice what is working. Believe it or not among your mountains of problems, there is A LOT that is not a problem in your life.

Maybe you are struggling at work, but your health is good. Maybe you are facing relationship issues but love your job. It is never all wrong or bad and if it is then it’s likely that you are NOT seeing it clearly.

Begin to get curious about what is working well and why. Here are some questions to consider:

What is working well?

Why is it working well?

What are you doing or not doing in that area of life?

Has that area of life always been easier?

How do you show up in that area?

What are some of your thoughts and beliefs around it?

With love and light,
