“The best use of imagination is creativity; the worst use of imagination is anxiety” Deepak Chopra
Are you using your imagination or is it using you?
We are all gifted with the ability to create and believe it or not, there is a direct link between imagination and anxiety. Being able to conjure up the worst-case scenario and create a Spielberg movie in your mind in 10 seconds flat is surely a gift that only a creative person could come up with!
Of course, if you are not Spielberg and don’t work in Hollywood, this can become an unhealthy habit and a wasted use of our creative gifts. It can also explain why you are different from your spouse or friend who does not tend to worry or come up with fearful (and unlikely) scenarios.
What would happen if you consciously used your imagination for creativity rather than worry? What would you create? How would you spend your time?
I am a huge fan of Steve Martin. Since I was a child, I loved his comedy, acting, writing and now music. He literally does not stop. Whoa – there is someone who truly uses his creativity. I wonder how much time he is spending on worrying about worst case scenarios.
Imagine that all the time and energy that gets drained by worrying gets placed in crafts, creative writing, dance, music, food, home decoration, etc.
Truly take a moment to feel the amount of space and possibilities that arise within you.
YOU ARE A HIGHLY CREATIVE BEING + CREATIVITY IS LIFE. It is the beauty that surrounds us, it is the music that calms hearts, it is the food that connects your family, it is in the warmth of your home, the clothes you wear, the movement of dance, the laughter of a joke. This is creativity – this is LIFE and our souls want it.
Your soul is waiting to be expressed through your choice of art!
Now there are a few steps to address:
- What creative pursuit interests you? If you have no idea, be willing to try a class. Take a risk, the reward will be great!
- Are you willing to be a novice again? This can be uncomfortable especially if you are a perfectionist, but do not let it deter you. Art is expression, it is not perfection.
- Purposely carve out time to spend on it. Whether is taking photos, finding a fun outfit to wear, or painting quotes on stones; use your time to do it.
- Recognize your tendency to worry as a creative gift – it only needs to be redirected toward things that you love and want to give to others (my writing is an example of this.) This makes your anxiety less powerful because it is no longer the evil keeping you stuck, there are pathways to peace.
I hope this supports you on your journey and I send you love! Every small step you take makes a difference.
