Growth Hurts Keep Going

“Do you want to be a prisoner of the past or pioneer of the future?” Deepak Chopra

When I think about growing, healing, and changing the vision that comes up me at the beach. I am enjoying the fresh air; the sun is shining on my skin, and I feel relaxed and trusting about my life. Some version of this vision comes up for all my clients as well.

It is important to have a vision and clear understanding of what we want for ourselves because IT IS POSSIBLE. However, we sometimes jump to the fairy tale happy ending without acknowledging that growth can hurt. Or we are disappointed and give up when we realize our expectations weren’t met.

About 6 months ago I started physical training with a coach. I had back pain from my pregnancy and wanted to feel strong again after all my body experienced during two pregnancies. The image I had was of how good I would feel being able to carry my baby without pain and how strong and energized I would feel physically.

The vision motivated to keep going even though my work outs were HARD AS HELL. They were out of my comfort zone because it was something I never tried before. I never knew that while I was getting stronger, my body was changing, and it physically hurt. I had aches and sore muscles that I never experienced before.

This is true to inner growth as well. When we are brave enough to make changes in our lives. To speak up when we used to remain quiet, to say no when we used to say yes, to evaluate jobs, relationships, and choices; and actively choose ones that serve us rather than ones that harm us – we are growing, and it can hurt.

There are tears, discomfort and a lot of FEAR included in healing and growing. These may be painful, but they are leading us closer to our truest and freest self. In other words, they are worth it. If you compare this with the suffering of staying in the old habits, you can clearly see the difference. Staying in old habits keeps us small and stuck, the pain doesn’t lead to growth but to more pain.

If you are on the journey of growth, healing, awakening and are experiencing pain, remember that it means you are moving through the old ways and will land somewhere healthier – don’t let the pain deter you from growing or facing whatever is present.

The only way to this is to be honest about what’s happening. Ask yourself:

Is the pain or discomfort I feel from showing up differently or from staying stuck in bad habits?

How can I offer myself compassion and support during this time?

Pain is a part of the process. If it wasn’t more people would do it.
